Why Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice and Home Care?
“The Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice and Home Care” of Southern Belize is the fulfillment of a deeply personal wish to honor my late father’s name by creating a compassion driven legacy for the people of Belize. Witnessing his uncomfortable, long, painful bus journeys back and forth to receive treatment for prostate cancer eventually led me to bring him to North Virginia, USA. for hospice care. As he lay dying, he selflessly thought of others back home suffering as he had. He wanted them to receive the end-of-life care provided for him at Capital Hospice. It was in that moment I made the commitment to fulfill his wish to create comfort care, in a familiar environment that spoke life, dignity, autonomy, and compassion on the terms of those who needed support at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.
What we provide
Following the tenants of good hospice, we strive to offer care that is based on quality of life as per the ever-changing needs of the people we serve and their families. Our teams provide physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual/social needs of patients while imparting coping strategies and practical tools for family caregivers onsite, at home, as well as in the community. While our major focus is a comprehensive system of care for cancer patients in Southern Belize, we extend these services to other patients with life shortening illnesses too.
Our Philosophy
Hospice focuses on care, not cure. According to The American Cancer Society, the word hospice is rooted in the centuries-old idea of offering a place of shelter and rest, or ‘hospitality’ to weary and sick travelers on a long journey. Dame Cicely Saunders at St. Christopher’s Hospice in London first applied the term ‘hospice’ to specialized care for dying patients in 1967.
Building on that, our philosophy is simple. We are family and are there for you in your time of need.
